American Women: Gibson Girl

In concurrence with this year's MET Costume Institute Gala theme, and the recent spread in the May issue of American Vogue, over the next few weeks, I have decided to highlight what I think acts as inspiration for the American Women of the past's archetypes - the Gibson Girl, the Heiress, the Bohemian, the Screen Siren, the Patriot, and the Flapper.

Today celebrates the Gibson Girl - the original tomboy. She was strong and determined, outdoorsy and the first to play sports and seek an original identity for her self beyond predetermined womanly roles. She was the ultimate feminist seeking strength, education and above all equality with men.

  2. You know I love it when you get all feministy. Love, love that necklace and I adore the pins - especially the blue one. Beautiful pieces - as usual.
